Background: I'm a Somerset England born, farm raised, re-recording mixer/sound designer, who is currently the creative director at Gigantic Studios, NYC’s premier documentary post studio. I’ve also had the pleasure of working in some of New York City and London's premiere studios. With 2x EMMY® & 3x Golden Reel nominations, a CAS nomination & 150+ film & television credits, I’ve established myself in post audio as a seasoned creative collaborator.
I’ve worked in multiple media formats from ATMOS to immersive experiential gallery audio, ranging from feature narratives to short-form episodic, documentary and advertisements for clients including A24, HBO, Netflix, Showtime, Aston Martin, Google. And film-makers including Yorgos Lanthimos, Matthew Heineman & Trey Edward Shultz. I am also an active member of the MPSE.
Philosophy: I bring an understanding of emotion to my work with an educational foundation in psychology as well as audio engineering. I enjoy getting to deeply understand my source material, whilst searching for the subtext of each scene as the story builds and planning how to enhance it through intentional and nuanced choices. I look for musicality, rhythm and intent in every sound I choose. Every sound must have purpose.
In an ideal world, we get to work with our collaborators from an early stage. This allows a creative workflow that leaves room for the generation of ideas before even getting to the picture editorial. I love to read a script and imagine the sonic environment, rather than image, this helps to feel the writers intent and characters feelings and motives. Then working with production stills, and select edited scenes to further understand the actual environment and parameters we get to work within. Using this information, I get to work recording new and unique sounds, staying away from licensed material as much as possible. This ensures my team and I are connected to our own material which has a personal stamp of uniqueness. I like to work closely with the editorial department sharing these sonic pallets and ideas building an accurate temp guide that is more reflective of the final sonic world, so that once we’re on the mix stage we are aligned, having fun, and focusing fully on the story.
